High Frequency (Ultrasonic) Systems - HF
- Target specific species – Clupeidae
- Retrofittable to existing intake structures
- Suitable for a wide range of intakes
- Ability to combine with other solutions including our other systems
- Lower capital outlay than physical screens
- Can prevent plant outages caused by large shoals of fish
- Minimal environmental impact on non-target biota
System Operation
The system generates a high-frequency ultrasonic signal that is specifically effective for deterring Clupeidae (a family of fish that includes herring, sardines, and anchovies). These high-frequency sounds are outside the normal hearing range of most fish but are perceived by Clupeidae as a potential threat or discomfort, causing them to alter their swimming path.
SILAS Control Software
Our advanced SILAS control software provides real-time feedback on the operation and status of the deployed HF units. This information is crucial for both operators and regulators, as it offers confirmation of the system’s effectiveness and allows for adjustments to be made if necessary. SILAS monitors various parameters, such as signal strength, frequency, and power consumption, and can generate alerts if any issues are detected.
Project-Specific Design
Each HF system is custom-designed by FGS to meet the specific requirements of the project. This ensures that the acoustic barrier effectively blocks the target area and creates the desired sound field for optimal deterrence. The design process involves:
- Site Assessment: A thorough analysis of the site, including water depth, flow rate, fish species present, and infrastructure layout.
- Acoustic Modeling: Computer simulations are used to predict the propagation of sound waves in the water and determine the optimal placement and configuration of the transducers.
- Transducer Selection: The appropriate type and number of transducers are chosen based on the site conditions and desired sound field.
- System Integration: The transducers, power supply, and control system are integrated into a cohesive and reliable unit.
Benefits of HF Systems
- Environmentally Friendly: The system uses sound to deter fish, avoiding the need for harmful chemicals or physical barriers.
- Species-Specific: The high-frequency signal is specifically tuned to deter Clupeidae, minimizing the impact on other aquatic life.
- Effective: The acoustic barrier creates a strong deterrent effect, significantly reducing fish impingement and entrainment.
- Reliable: The system is built with high-quality components and advanced control software, ensuring consistent and long-lasting performance.
- Customisable: Each system is tailored to the specific project requirements, ensuring optimal results.
