Many of our solutions have been adapted for temporary or mobile use, allowing them to be used in water-based construction environments.
A mobile fish deterrent is often used when protected species such as salmon are at risk of the piling and underwater blasting activities associated with construction projects. The protection they afford can ensure regulatory obligations for fish protection are met.
These solutions can be deployed from a barge or boat in both freshwater and estuarine environments, with equipment moved to different locations as the project progresses.
A mobile sound projector array (SPA) was even used during production of the James Bond film The World is Not Enough in London’s Docklands.
Depth charges were to be used throughout the film’s iconic boat chase scene, leading to concerns a large number of fish could be harmed or killed. The temporary installation of two FGS systems kept fish away, preventing deaths when the explosives were set off.
Mobile guidance for salmon and trout
A mobile SPA was also deployed for the Queensferry Crossing over the Forth estuary in Scotland, where a short-term blasting project could have had a detrimental effect on protected salmon and sea trout populations.
The system was deployed from the back of a boat and fish were successfully guided away from the blast area.
Other effective uses of mobile systems include protection of fish at temporary water intakes, such as during floods, and the herding of fish upstream to facilitate projects such as the purging of a dam. Details of the systems with potential for mobile application can be found at the highlighted links below.
Species
Many species of fish can successfully be deterred using our behavioural systems.
